A Bit of History

Lives of great men all remind us
We can make our lives sublime,
And, departing, leave behind us
Footprints on the sands of time

These gallant soldiers of the cross changed the world in their days. We hope you enjoy a few of their words.

Charles Finney

"There can be no revival when Mr. Amen and Mr. Wet-Eyes are not found in the audience."

When Charles G. Finney, to my way of thinking (and I'm just one), was one of the greatest ministers since Saint Paul. He claimed to have won a million souls to Christ. Dwight Moody in his day… Charles Finney was a—a lawyer, an educated man, and he was God's message to the world in his day, an educated man who got many hundreds of lawyers together.

John Knox

"As the world is weary of me so am I of it."

"A man with God is always in the majority."

Any of them, you search through the Scriptures, and search through the history, and find out. Martin Luther, John Wesley, Saint… Calvin, Knox, Finney, Sankey, whoever it might be, just look at them, how they come out from among them things and stood alone upon their convictions. God's servants.

George Whitfield

"The reason why congregations have been so dead is because they have dead men preaching to them. How can dead men beget living children?"

Just think of—of George Whitefield, he preached so hard and so loud, they could hear him two miles away, preaching the same Gospel that you're hearing right now.

Charles Spurgeon

"No man can do me a truer kindness in this world than to pray for me."

"I thought I could have leaped from earth to heaven at one spring when I first saw my sins drowned in the Redeemer's blood."

How about Luther, Calvin, Knox, Wesley, Spurgeon, Sankey, Finney, all down along the age? It's been men who stood alone in convictions of the resurrection of the beloved Son of the living God. That's right.

57-0114 The Infallible Proof Of The Resurrection

Martin Luther

"I have held many things in my hands, and have lost them all; but whatever I have placed in God's hands, that I still possess."

Notice, beautiful type. In the first reformation, there was a little man by the name of Martin Luther who got his eyes opened in the Scripture. And he knowed the just shall live by faith. And the Pillar of Fire begin to move out of that fifteen hundred years of dark ages, and Martin Luther saw the Pillar of Fire moving, he blasted the Gospel trumpet and went out with it, build under it.

Smith Wigglesworth

"This blessed Book brings such life and health and peace, and such an abundance that we should never be poor anymore."

"Before God could bring me to this place He has broken me a thousand times."

Fifty years ago, the Holy Ghost fell in England. Just after that come George Jeffreys, and F.F. Bosworth, and Charles Price, Smith Wigglesworth, those great warriors of the faith, fifty years ago, and offered England the Holy Ghost revival. But what did they do? They laughed at them, put them in jail, called them crazy, thought they had lost their minds. The churches refused the people to come hear them. And they healed the sick, and cast out devils, and done great works. And because that England, as a nation, rejected the Gospel, her—her sins is knowed throughout all the world.

F.F. Bosworth

"Believe your beliefs and doubt your doubts."

How many ever knowed Brother F. F. Bosworth? He's happier tonight than he's ever been. He's in glory. The gallant soldier, one of the most outstanding Bible teachers on Divine healing I ever met in my life… I've read of many great men, and I've read their history. I've heard them that had little mark here, and a little black mark here, and a little mark against them over here; but never one voice did I ever hear, or anything, against F. F. Bosworth. He was a man that lived what the Bible teaches. He was the most honest and upright and unguiled person that I know of.

58-0125 The Queen Of The South

Dwight Moody

"Let God have your life; He can do more with it than you can."

Then I think of great, noted men who died, believing in our Lord Jesus Christ and His resurrection. I think of, here, of—of D. L. Moody, at his death, a lot have said. "Why, is this death?" He said, "This is my coronation day."
