The Caribbean Island of Hispaniola experienced its worst earthquake in 200 years yesterday. The magnitude 7.0 quake was centered near the capital of Haiti, Port-au-Prince, where it leveled thousands of buildings.
Earthquakes of this size are rare in Haiti and it is a very poor country, so the buildings are not built to withstand this intensity of shaking. Even some of the largest and best-built government agencies are either collapsed or badly damaged. There are no accurate estimates of deaths or extent of damage at this time, but there could be tens of thousands of people dead. The memory of the devastating hurricane that ravaged the island a little over a year ago is still fresh in their minds as they deal with this new tragedy.
Our contact with the believers is limited at this time, so we are lifting them up in prayer and asking the Lord to protect His children. As we look over the utter devastation broadcast across the news agencies, our hearts look up to Heaven. Our faith is not in the concrete and wooden structures that surround us. The prophet told us that these things would happen, and as they do, our faith gets stronger in the Word of God. That is where we find our refuge.
We will post updates as they come in, and please remember the Haitian believers in your prayers.
