We are so blessed to have the privilege to know that He watches over us and keeps us in the time of trouble. As our prophet said it best, "Oh, it introduces us to that great I AM, the ever present One, Who is always near to help in the time of trouble. And we thank Thee because that we have this privilege." 57-0519A HEAR YE HIM
As I read this testimony (A Very Present Help), I am encouraged to share a similar car door experience where God was on the scene. It was about eight years ago when my family and I were camping with my mom and another family in the Message. Most of our children were still young, and we went on a short drive in my pickup truck to get some firewood.
As little ones will do, they wanted to be right there helping, so a few of them came along for the ride. As we came back to camp, I was walking around the truck when I heard a loud scream from the driver's side. I knew right away it was one of the children, so quickly ran back around the truck to see what happen. When I got to the driver's side, I saw that my five-year-old daughter had closed the driver's door on her right hand and was just standing there shaking in shock. My heart dropped as I ran to her.
The first thing I noticed was that the door was completely shut. Then as I moved closer, I could see that her thumb was completely in the door right up to the palm of her hand. I opened the door quickly and grabbed her thumb in my hand without looking, and picked her up in my arms as I rushed to the picnic table. All the way I was just yelling, "Help us Jesus, Help us Jesus." I think I was in a bit of shock myself.
As I got to the picnic table, Mom and others were rushing in to look at how bad the damage was. I slowly loosened my grip to look at the thumb. I expected to see a mangled finger, but what we saw was normal looking thumb with a clean break at the middle joint. The thumb was perfect other than that at the middle joint, it was broken to the right at about 45 degrees. I was so grateful that it wasn't completely mashed that I just grabbed her thumb again and just started praising God for His mercy.
My wife gave me some ice and we were going to go to the hospital, but as I took my hand off her thumb for the second time, I was astonished. It was now perfectly straight. I was a bit doubtful on what I was seeing, as now the thumb looked perfect in every way except for a small light crease at the base of thumb.
I asked my wife and others, "Does that thumb still look broke to you?" Everyone agreed with a bit of amazement that, no, it didn't look broken anymore. I asked my daughter if she could move it. Sure enough, she had stopped crying and could move it normally. Within five minutes time, she was playing again with the other children and was laughing.
All afternoon we kept saying, "Rebekah, show me your thumb." She would smile and put her thumb in the air and wiggle it for us. God's grace is beyond understanding, but real none the less.
