Warm temperatures, strong winds, and an approaching cold front caused forecasters to predict powerful thunderstorms in the Jeffersonville area for Friday, March 2. The National Weather Service called it an “almost a perfect tornado maker.” And that is exactly what it was when the storms spawned upwards of 90 tornadoes that ripped apart the Nation’s midsection, killing 39 people, injuring hundreds, and leaving tens of thousands with major damage to their homes and property. Here in southern Indiana, we saw the worst of the tornadoes.
A monstrous twister touched ground near Fredericksburg, Indiana (about 26 miles northwest of Jeffersonville), and started its deadly path to the east. It slammed into Henryville (about 18 miles north of Jeffersonville) with devastating 200 mph winds, where it ripped the whole town apart.
By this time, the EF4 tornado was about a half mile wide. It threaded the needle between two VGR employees’ homes (video shown on the previous article) that are located barely more than a half a mile apart, then made its way to Marysville, where our Still Waters Camp is located. It passed safely to the south of the camp, and seemed to weave its way between the homes of believers.
One of our employees saw the clouds thicken and the storm bearing down on his home and family. As he cried out to the Lord, a small twister raced through the edge of his property, but the monster passed safely overhead without touching ground; his home and his family protected by God’s merciful hand.
The tornado plowed through 49 miles before it finally disappeared near Bedford Kentucky, about 28 miles northeast of Jeffersonville. But the storm was not over as the tornado passed. Hailstones the size of tennis balls rained down in the wake of the twister. The hail put holes in roofs, broke car windshields, and wounded countless people who were caught unaware.
Some believers had damage to their homes and properties, but not one suffered bodily harm. VGR employees and many others were out the following days helping our fellow believers clean up from the storms.
We appreciate all the emails and phone calls that we have received from around the world, and most of all, we appreciate your prayers. Truly, our Lord Jesus was merciful.
